History

Historic Elizabeth was established in 1664 and became the first English settlement in New Jersey, and was named for the wife of Sir George Carteret. It became a prominent and thriving economic center, and it was the first capital of New Jersey. The first major industry, the Singer Sewing Machine Company came to Elizabeth and employed as many as 2,000 people. Union County was originally a part of Essex County and was officially formed in 1857. It was the last of New Jersey's counties to be created.
